The floods caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy devastated major cities and small towns alike. Despite millions of dollars spent in aid and reconstruction, areas of New Orleans are still uninhabitable after Katrina and some New Yorkers are still coping without power after Sandy.
With this in mind, imagine the destruction that such natural disasters would cause in a third world country with little or no infrastructure and an inept government providing little to no social welfare services. Unfortunately, floods far worse are an annual event in south-east Pakistan. These floods have annihilated villages, eradicated farms and livestock and killed thousands of people. In addition, the long term effects cause even more devastation: Typhoid, malaria, and hepatitis breakouts, orphaned children and homeless families.
Aid through private NGOs was possible for villages near major cities and this outpouring of assistance made a tremendous difference. However, there remain remote villages that due to geographic location and/or ethnic make up were unable to receive immediate relief.
Human Welfare Organization (HWO), based in Karachi, Pakistan stepped up and sent several tons of food, livestock, clothing, blankets, and medical aid to these remote villages. HWO not only provided immediate relief aid but continues to assist families affected by the floods with orphan sponsorship programs, livestock distribution, and monthly stipends for families to help them regain independence.
HWO and JANARelief are in partnership, working together to assist victims of these natural disasters. If you would be interested in making a donation or sponsoring a child or family, click on the DONATE link above to get started.
